Job Summary
The Director of Technical Operations holds a pivotal role in spearheading the project portfolio in addition to being a center of technical expertise. Reporting to the VP of Marine Operations, this role will deliver projects that drive the company's commitment to innovation and sustainability, plus the genuine care and comfort of our guests. An equally important aspect is to provide technical expertise and drive fleetwide technical strategies such as maintenance or efficiency projects.
Essential Functions
Project & Technical Management
- Oversee and collaborate in the planning and execution of special projects related to retrofitting, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and the overall enhancement of the fleet.
- Lead CapEx project management, including dry docks, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget.
- Manage yacht condition projects, ensuring continuous improvement in the vessel’s physical state and guest experience.
- Support the development of technical standards for spares, processes, and maintenance procedures to optimize efficiency and reliability.
- Work closely with Hotel Operations (and other stakeholders such as product and IT) to ensure alignment with the project roadmap.
- Oversee the development of new technical SOPs
- Maintain a technology roadmap and advocate for necessary system upgrades in addition to supporting the implementation of new systems.
- Represent the company’s technical operation and interests in policy/procedure development and in regulatory discussions or industry consortia.
- Support the operations team during the guarantee period with specialized technical expertise where needed. Responsible for follow-up and closing of the Protocol of Delivery process.
Data Analysis & Reporting
- With support from the Program Management Office, analyze project data, generate quality and risk reports, and present findings to support strategic decision-making.
- Establish and maintain a centralized repository for technical drawings, manuals, and instructions, ensuring accessibility and accuracy.
- Crisis & Situation Management Support
- Support asset management initiatives
Innovation, Research & Development
- Drive innovation and technical system integration, researching and introducing new technologies for ship retrofits, refits, and all new projects to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.
- Lead Research & Development (R&D) initiatives, in line with the company’s operational vision.
- Continuously maintain and develop the generic RCYC ship technical specification in preparation for future new build and revise projects, in close collaboration with various departments across the company.
Financial and Management
- Support the development of the annual technical budget, optimizing both OPEX and CAPEX.
- Lead CAPEX strategy development, assessing and prioritizing investments in vessel improvements and maintenance across not only marine but also hotel and product.
- Partner with a variety of finance and accounting roles to convey the financial status of the projects.
- Lead the development of meaningful divisional goals with the identification and execution of innovative tactics to achieve those goals. Build business cases that secure resourcing and ensure execution.
- Support the Safety & Training manager to deliver a technical training program.
- Responsible for fleetwide strategic maintenance agreements or vendor strategies, with close collaboration with fleet operations.
Competency
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture required; master’s degree strongly preferred
- Chief Engineer license or similar professional certification showcasing marine operations expertise desired
- 10+ years of combined maritime experience, with a demonstrable history of leading large-scale technical projects, maintenance, and teams
- Direct experience in vessel retrofitting, dry dock management, and implementing sustainable maritime practices
- Comprehensive knowledge of international maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW) and environmental compliance standards
- Demonstrated experience in crisis management and leading emergency response efforts in a maritime context
- Familiarity with shipbuilding specifications, contract negotiations, and R&D initiatives
- Ability to travel to the vessels and various offices
- Acknowledge the on-call nature of maritime operations, with rare urgent cases requiring immediate support. Our Rules of Engagement ensure responsiveness without fostering an 'always-on' culture.
