Purpose of Role
  • To produce and deliver drawings and technical information to a high quality and in accordance with the Design drawing schedule and Oyster Group Schedule.
  • Record and process other design information in the form of weight management and design development.
  • Support yard and build teams with relevant lifting, loading and yard positioning information for boats in various stages of their production.
  • Support Project managers with relevant technical information to aid Client decision making and spec choices.
  • Process data from commissioning team, in way of freeboard measurements, inclining procedures and performance data.
Key Job Responsibilities
  • Production, maintenance and management of technical information, focused on the Naval Architecture, and Exterior Fit out of the boats in build, and through design development of new models.
  • Issue design information and liaise with external suppliers and fabricators.
  • Work with Production and fabricators to ensure corrections and updates are made where necessary – updating the designs and methods to reduce lost time and minimise complication, where possible. 
  • Maintain and update design information databases (drawings issue registers / weight estimates etc.) including, sail plans, deck plans and general arrangements.
  • Input into Weight Studies and assistance with Naval Architecture as required.
  • Cradle design, docking plans and load calculations
  • Rigging component design and development in collaboration with suppliers
  • Surface modelling and GRP tooling design
  • Deck fittings- Specification of standard parts. Design / development of custom parts
  • Custom fabrications - Stainless steel fabrications. Exterior mechanical designs and installations, e.g. Pushpit, Passerelles, biminis, deck hatches
  • Attend development meetings to stay abreast of variations and keep up to date with Production feedback, where required. 
  • Research appliance / component technical specifications, new system, or design development, where relevant.
  • Continuous improvement on ways of working and design processes, to enhance efficiency.


Requirements

Knowledge

·       Practical knowledge and understanding of sailing yachts

·       Good knowledge of Naval Architecture

·       Good understanding of stainless steel / aluminium and composite fabrication techniques

·       Good understanding of the design / specification of sailing systems (hydraulic rams, furlers, winches etc.)

Sound understanding of mechanical systems



Skills

·       3D parametric modelling (NX Preferred but not essential)

·       2D AutoCAD draughting

·       Competent user of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel

·       Ability to read and produce technical information

Communication, particularly ability to share and interpret technical drawing with production team


Experience

·       Practical experience within the marine industry

Proven track record in a similar/comparable Design role


Qualifications

Degree level qualified in Naval Architecture or a relevant topic such as technical design or engineering
